When it comes to movies, I’m one that clutches my favorites very close to my heart and will usually pick from one of those. Along those lines, I usually prefer reruns of Friends, Chopped or Impractical Jokers to putting on a movie, unless it’s Disney of course. That being said, lately I’ve been gravitating more towards movies, my favorites nonetheless. When it comes to ‘girl power’ movies, I like to veer away from overly cliche, romantic comedies because I just don’t enjoy them. Today, I’m sharing with you a selection of my favorite girl power movies that deliver a good kick in the pants.
Before I get all kinds of crap for this, hear me out. If you remove the Disney-ness (and musical numbers) from Mulan, you really see how much of a badass she is. She essentially told the rest of her family to sit down while she went off to fight in a war against some pretty terrible dudes. Not to mention she had to convince everyone she was a boy and prove that she was just as strong, if not stronger, than her naturally male counterparts. (I’m going to let you draw the comparisons to the modern era.) After some strategic creativity and luck she saves her comrades, the Emperor and all of China. Yeah, she’s a badass.

The Devil Wears Prada
I’m not going to lie to you, I have seen this movie so many times that I know exactly when I can stop watching (for me that’s when they get to Paris). Not only does badassery beam from Miranda Preesley, but it eventually begins to beam from Andy Sacks. My biggest takeaway from this movie is that fashion, accessories and the like are all means to empower who you are underneath that. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to see that when I slip on my favorite pair of heels – I feel more confident, put together and at ease. Something this movie touches on that I also appreciate is that it showcases mistakes made by many parties throughout the story. It shows the mistake, the immediate fallout and consequences and then shows that life goes on. It shows that yes, we all make mistakes (even the Miranda Preesley’s of the world) and we move on.
I really love spy movies. I also really love Angelina Jolie. While this movie may not seem like the obvious choice for such a list, I think it is very well deserving to be on many more of them. In a nutshell, Salt (Jolie) saves the world in quite a violent way. While her backstory is unorthodox (I don’t think many of us grew up in a Russian orphanage that makes spies) it shows that the events of our past don’t necessarily define who we are right now, the characteristics and traits that we displayed during those events, that have persisted overtime, are what define us. Salt is an all around fierce badass character and a movie that deserves a large popcorn.

I weirdly think that the Disney whimsy adds a necessary layer of fun to this tale. Matilda, a young girl who is neglected and teased by her family, takes it upon herself to learn, excel and right wrongs made by others. She is an eight year old badass who is cunning, brilliant and very kind.
